Abstract |
Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging tick-borne infectious disease, which is caused by the
genus Phlebovirus in the Bunyaviridae family. The syndrome was characterized by fever, gastrointestinal symptoms, neutropenia,
and thrombocytopenia. Recent increase in the number of reported cases and deaths in endemic areas, such as China, Japan,
and Korea, has posed the greatest public health concern. The first patient on Jeju Island where is the most endemic area in
Korea was identified in May 2013. However, there is no currently effective treatment available for SFTS unresponsive to
supportive care. SFTS in terms of the development of therapies deserves further study. |
