Abstract |
Kawasaki disease (KD) is a multi-systemic vasculitis that leads to coronary artery damage and coronary artery lesions (CALs). Recent studies have demonstrated that patients with Kawasaki disease have elevated expression, activity, or serum level of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and MMPs promoter polymorphisms modify each transcriptional activity in allele specific manner. Therefore, an evaluation of the genetic contributions of the MMP genes to the development of CALs in KD patients would be beneficial for the prediction of CAL formation. However , it remains unclear whether the tested MMP polymorphisms are associated with KD or CAL formation. To firmly estabtish the association between MMP polymorphisms and the development of CAL in KD, further large-scale studies are required in other populations. |
