Abstract |
The purpase of this study was to appraîse whether Hirschman-Herfindahl Indexes(HHI) that were measured by using data of 2002 Korean patient survey were robust over a broad range of cut-off values that were applied to the measure of hospital market structure. Hospital's HHI was calculated by using 2002 patients survey data according to methods proposed by Zwanziger delineate hospital market area of each of all Korean hospitals, identify competitor hospitals and calculate each hospital's HHI. ln order to measure the sensitivity of the HHI to changes in rules defining hospital market, we adopt three criterion assesment: the average value of the HHI by 10 different approaches that defined hospital market and competitor; the HHI's percentile distribution over by 10 different approaches; hospital rank ordering over 10 different sets of rules. The average value of HHl for 10 different approaches is 0.11 (S.D. = 0.002). The distribution of HHI's percentile values stable under changes in the hospital market defining rule. In assessing changes in hospital HHI ranking by 10 different sets of rules, the degrees of correlation for 10 pairs exceeded 0.926. The results indicated that the consistency of the HHI across rules was demonstrated by the very high correlation. These results led us to the conclusion thal HHls that were measured by using data of 2002 Korean patient survey were robust, despite changes in the hospital market defining rule. |
